If you have noticed your computer acting strangely with many advertisement pop-up windows and/or a slow down you may have malware.
What is malware?
Malware can be downloaded by accidentally clicking on an unknown website or certain pop up windows that may appear on your screen during a website visit.
Some of these programs change your home page and also redirect your computer to other websites.
So how can I prevent this?
Try and avoid unknown sites. If a pop up window appears and wants you to install or authorize a change... please read very carefully and be cautious.
Don't install the "extras"
Some software you install (the free ones) may prompt you to "accept third-party installations" You don't need to install these. Just "decline" and continue on with the installations.
Pirated software
Obtaining free software that is normally paid for may seem like a great idea, however you are taking a risk. First of all the software that was hacked may come with unknown additions to it. What kind of additions? Well, virus-laden software can be a consequence.
It is best to pay for software. It will cost you money, but in the long run you will receive a safe product and not get into possible trouble with the owners of the software for not paying for it.
So what can I do now? I already have malware?
If you can, try to uninstall it through the control panel. This may not resolve the problem. Some programs are running in the background and it may just re-install itself later.
Windows 7
If you are successful in uninstalling the malware, you still need to make sure you scan and remove any "left-over" pieces of that program.
There may be an opportunity for the program to still be running in the background and reinstall itself.
Finding a good malware removal program is essential to removing the problem and getting your computer back to normal operation.
